RCGP General Practice Foundation
Mission statement:
"Working together to improve
patient care."
What it does:
Provides educational support
for members of practice team (based on standards set by their own
professional/regulatory bodies); focuses on improving the quality
of patient care and team working/collaboration.
What it doesn't do:
Does not comment (or provide
advice) on terms and conditions of service; does not set standards
for individual professions working in general practice (GPN, PM,
PA)
British Medical Association
Mission statement:
Independent trade union and
professional association for doctors and medical students.
What it
does:
Trade union for doctors
including GPs.
General Medical Council
Mission
statement:
Ensures that only properly qualified doctors are registered and
allowed to practise in the UK.
What it does:
Regulatory body for general
practitioners in the UK
Nursing & Midwifery Council
Mission
statement:
The Nursing & Midwifery
Council exists to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the
public.
What it does:
Regulatory body for nurses,
including nurses working in general practice.
Royal College of Nursing
Mission
statement:
The RCN represents nurses
and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health
policies.
What it
does:
Trade union for nurses,
including those working in general practice.
What it doesn't do:
Is not a regulatory body for
nursing
Institute of Healthcare Managers
Mission
statement:
The IHM supports managers whose
excellence in management contributes to excellence in healthcare.
By promoting the highest standards in healthcare management, IHM
plays a leading role in improving effectiveness in the quality of
health services.
What it does:
Promotes good practice and
sets professional standards for managers working in healthcare
including general practice.
What it doesn't do:
Is not a regulatory body for practice managers.
UK Association of Physician
Assistants
Mission
statement:
UKAPA was founded in July 2005 by
American physician assistants employed in the United Kingdom in an
effort to support and promote the development of the PA profession
in the UK.
What it does:
Promotes the development of
the PA profession in the UK.
What it doesn't do:
Is not a regulatory body for PAs (role still to be assigned)
National Association of Primary
Care
Mission
statement:
Is a leading national
membership organisation, which represents and supports the
interests of all healthcare professionals, both clinicians and
managers, working in primary care. We help them deliver effective
and efficient patient-centred care.
What it does:
Influences the development of NHS policy and support members via
a range of services, events and activities including the
dissemination of best practice.
