Development of the Foundation

Most General Practitioners work with other healthcare professionals to deliver high quality patient care - and the RCGP is keen to support all those working as part of the primary care team.

In 2008, the College brought together groups of nurses, managers and physician assistants to look at ways in which it could provide educational support and help develop their careers with the overall aim of improving standards of care for patients. This resulted in the establishment of the new General Practice Foundation.

Each of the professions identified a lead to sit on the Foundation Executive Board which steers the initiative. Chaired by the RCGP President, Dr Iona Heath, the Foundation works to ensure that the views of nurses, managers and physician assistants are heard and valued in all aspects of the College’s work.
