The Role of a Practice Manager

Managers of practices provide leadership and management skills to enable the practice to meet its agreed aims and objectives within a profitable, efficient, safe and effective working environment. Aims and objectives may vary from site to site and from trust to authority but GPs and their whole teams are there to deliver care to patients.

 

Skills effective practice managers might have include:

Communication (verbal, written and presentational)

Strategic management and planning
Financial management
Human Resources
Organisational
Information management and technology
Dissemination of information, training, coaching and mentoring

Development and leadership of teams


Knowledge or experience managers could bring include:

GMS, PMS and other relevant general practice regulatory requirements

Development, monitoring and auditing of patient-related services

Liaison with patients, and dealing with complaints and significant events
Management of practice targets (for example, the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF))

Health & safety, and management of premises and equipment
Management of stress in self and others

Equality and diversity
Personal/professional development
Contribution to the implementation of services, including liaison with multi-disciplinary groups, community and secondary care personnel
