Practice Accreditation

You can find out more about registration on the RCGP PA page, but below we have some FAQs which you may find useful.

What is the difference between QPA (Quality Practice Award) and Practice Accreditation?

The PA award can be obtained by any practice within a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 3 years. Stage 1 is aligned to the CQC registration requirements (practices can begin CQC registration from October 2011 and must be registered by April 2012). Stage 2 has been developed to enable practices to demonstrate that they have been involved in a quality improvement initiative. PA demonstrates considerable achievement to deliver high quality primary care but is not at the high level set by QPA. By comparison, QPA is a more stretching award which would be demanding for most practices to obtain if they have not already been involved in a quality improvement programme.

If a practice has variable standards in the quality of their organisational processes, PA would be the most successful and efficient option for the practice to be able to demonstrate achievement of a level aligned to CQC. The majority of practices should be able to achieve this within a year (and then continue working towards the full award over the next 1-2 years). The attainment of the full QPA award, however, will take in the region of 18 months to 3 years and is not currently aligned to CQC.
